Rick’s Computer Services is an IT service provider. Yes, those are good ideas. But we’re interested in Essentials for the simplicity of the install. Will probably run it in a VM. But would like to understand what happens down the road if they outgrow the Essentials and need more than 25 users.
Is it a simple install over the existing software or do you have to start clean? I’ve done it over the years for several customers that have grown above the Can you clarify the users vs devices licensing on Essentials?

I though I did my due diligence, I have a customer with a server R2 essentials server. After asking specific questions I installed a server essentials as a member with no server rolls.
The customer has ben reporting random reboots of the server essentials. Can the server essentials be upgraded to server standard with a license key or will I have to perform a fresh install of server standard?
Yes, you can upgrade it using license key. Purchase a Windows Server Standard license 2. Open an administrative PowerShell command 3. Reboot when prompted. This isn’t working for me.
I have a product key open license for Server Standard, which I’m using in the command. Check that the specified product key is valid and that it matches the target edition. To be clear – I am following this procedure to upgrade Server Essentials to Server Standard. I apologize for the confusion. I’m assuming that the process didn’t change for Server I don’t believe Essentials can perform a license conversion to Standard.
I think it is a full install situation. I couldn’t find any MSFT information that states that, but the only information I found related to license conversion was from Standard to Datacenter. Where did the key you are using come from? Essentials to Standard conversion certainly is supported. Next, we purchased an open license for Server Standard, and this was the license key MAK I was unsuccessful in using for the conversion.
I called Microsoft Licensing thinking there was a problem with the product key, but they checked it, and it was good.
At this point, I was pretty desperate – the server was a Domain Controller, and was going to shut down permanently in less than 24 hours. I don’t know, but I assumed there wasn’t going to be any seizing it back before it shut down. I opened a ticket with Microsoft Technical Support.
The Engineer walked through all the steps I had done with no success. He finally made it work by using a product key that he had. The conversion ran and two reboots later Essentials was gone. We do not have a KMS server. Next, he ran the following. I asked him if he felt that there was anything that I had done in error to cause the problem, or if there was anything I could have done to fix it, and he said no.
He said he agreed with me and would speak to his manager. Pleasant surprise when I checked my email this morning and emails from him, his manager and Microsoft Support letting me know that they had reversed the charge. Thank you folks for your quick responses, and hopefully someone else will be able to benefit from my very scary experience. KMS keys are publicly listed , too, so anyone should be able to follow your steps if they run into the same issue.
The reason I asked where the key came from us exactly what your problem ended up being. There are ways to change the channel from OEM to VL and then your key will work which is what it appears the tech did. There was no OEM media involved. We purchased the server with no OS. I downloaded the. I never purchase servers with OS installed – that’s just plain asking for trouble.
Sorry about that. I must have confused this with another thread where someone mentioned purchasing their server with Essentials preinstalled. When the license is converted to Standard from Essentials, are you left with the Essentials feature set? I am not clear if the system stays as Essentials, but with a greater amount of CALS or the system properties will show Server Standard, a 2nd domain controller can be added to the domain etc.
You’ve always been able to add additional domain controllers but in doing so you would need to purchase CALs of course. Converting to Standard leaves you with Standard. For some reason I thought additional domain controllers could not be added to an “Essentials Domain”.
You can have as many as you want. The limit is the Essentials machine has to be at the root of the forest, hold all FSMO roles and does not support trusts. For some reason I thought additional domain controllers could not be added to an “Essentials Domain” You can have as many as you want. Wasn’t there a one DC limit on previous versions, though? I seem to recall that, too. Same thing with one customer on Essentials which needed to stay around for a while as well.
I am starting a small project soon where a client is setting up a second site. That is why I replied to this thread. I will post an update, my hopes are to add a Server Std. This topic has been locked by an administrator and is no longer open for commenting. Read these next
